What Do I Need to Open an Account with PlainsCapital Bank?

When you apply online, you will need to provide information about yourself. For a faster application process, have the following information on hand when you begin your application:

  • Your Social Security number
  • Valid form of identification including driver’s license, state ID, military ID, or passport
  • Your current residential address and prior address if you have lived at your current address for less than two years
  • Your email address
  • Your account number or credit card or debit card number to make your opening deposit into your new PlainsCapital Bank account
  • You must be at least 18 years of age

If You Are Applying for a Joint Account:

  • The primary applicant must be at least 18 years of age and the co-applicant must be 16 years of age or older
  • Both joint applicants must have a valid U.S. driver’s license and a valid U.S. Social Security number

If you are not a U.S. Citizen or U.S. Resident Alien and do not have this information, we will be unable to enroll you online. Please visit one of our branches for assistance.

Is My Online Application Secure?

PlainsCapital Bank uses encryption for online security. Encryption technology helps provide secure transmission data using a mathematical formula to scramble the data. Without a corresponding “decoder,” the transmission would look like nonsense text and would be unusable. We maintain strict security standards and procedures to prevent unauthorized access to your information, including 128-bit encryption.

Why Do You Need Ny Social Security Number?

We ask for your SSN to help verify your identity and, if the account is interest bearing, we must report interest earned on the account to the IRS using your SSN.

Why is Personal Information Required to Open an Account Online?

Your application is processed subject to our ability to verify your identity. (For more information, see “What do I need to open an account with PlainsCapital Bank?” above.)

What Is the Difference between Individual and Joint Ownership?

If you choose Individual, that account will be owned by you only. If you choose Joint, the account will be owned by you and your co-applicant.

What Information Do I Need to Open a Joint Account?

You’ll need the same information that’s needed when opening an individual account – but you’ll need it for both applicants. For details, please select “What do I need to open an account with PlainsCapital Bank?” above. Please note that each co-applicant has to sign the signature card.

How Do I Make an Opening Deposit for an Account that I Open Online?

To make your opening deposit online, you can either transfer money from your account at another bank or you can charge your MasterCard, Visa, Discover, or American Express credit card or debit card. If you are already a PlainsCapital Bank customer, you can transfer money from your existing account. The transfer will not take place until your account is approved. Please ensure that you have sufficient funds available to be transferred.

How Much Can I Deposit into My New Account When Applying Online?

When applying for a new account online, you can deposit any amount ranging from the minimum opening deposit amount (as little as $50 depending on the account type) or higher. Please refer to our account selection page for product minimums.

When Is the Opening Deposit Processed?

ACH transfers from your existing account at another financial institution to your new account will occur on the third business day. If you currently are a PlainsCapital Bank customer and are transferring money from an existing account with us, the transfer will occur on the next business day.

How Long Will it Take to Open an Account when I Apply Online?

Your application will be processed in 1 to 2 business days. We’ll send you an email letting you know if you are approved for your account. You will receive your account documents via U.S. Mail within 7 to 10 business days.

By signing up for Online Banking, you can check your balance(s), transfer funds, and pay bills, etc. Learn more here.

How Do I Get My Account Opening Documents?

As part of your online application, you will be asked to give consent to receive certain account opening documents and notices from us electronically. Other account opening documents will be sent through U.S. Mail within 7 to 10 days. If you do not give consent, you may visit any PlainsCapital Bank banking center to apply in person.

What Is a Signature Card? Why Do I Need to Send it Back to You?

A signature card allows PlainsCapital Bank to service your account. It is important to sign and mail your signature card to us as soon as possible (and have any co-applicants sign the signature card too). Once received, we can begin servicing your account. Having it on file also protects you against fraud and allows you to begin withdrawing from your new account. PlainsCapital Bank will keep this on file as a record of your written signature.

Can I Change the Information on My Account Application?

You have the option to edit your account information prior to submitting the information to PlainsCapital Bank. Simply click on the “Edit” button in the section you wish to change.

What Accounts Can I Open Online?

You will be able to open personal checking, savings accounts, CDs, and/or retirement accounts online.

What Can I Expect after My Account is Opened Online?

After you have completed the application, a confirmation email will be sent to the email address you provided during the application process. You will also need to print, sign, and return your signature card to PlainsCapital Bank.

Why Do You ask for My Email Address?

We ask for your email address to send you a confirmation notice when the application process is completed.

What Is A PIN Used for?

Your PIN is your “Personal Identification Number” that will be used to complete ATM and debit transactions with your PlainsCapital Bank Debit Card. The PIN must be a four-digit number (no letters or special characters) and should be unique to your new PlainsCapital Debit Card. Your Debit Card will be sent to you via mail and you will need your PIN to use it.

What Is an Offer Code?

An offer code is a series of numbers and letters that you may have received from PlainsCapital Bank in conjunction with a promotion or offer. Offer codes may be found on direct mail pieces, print ads, etc. You can then enter this offer code on your online application.
