PlainsCapital Bank Executives to Compete on Bobcat Skid Steer Loaders, Break Ground on New Location at 98th and Quaker

Trash talk ensues as Owens and Eubank prepare to face off at noon on April 17

PlainsCapital Bank is set to break ground on its 11th local branch at noon on Tues., April 17, with an unprecedented contest that will pit PlainsCapital Bank Lubbock Chairman John Owens against PlainsCapital Bank Lubbock President Les Eubank. With each executive behind the controls of a 61-horsepower skid steer loader, these two hardhat-clad bankers will face off in a Bobcat race. The Bobcats are being furnished by PlainsCapital Bank customer Brax Wright of ASCO.

“I’m always up for a little friendly competition, and I wish Les the best of luck,” Owens said. “He’s not had a valid driver license since 1972 when he flunked his driving test, so he needs all the luck he can get.”

Eubank said that he’s been training for the competition since January and has incorporated high- energy foods and drinks into his diet. He’s not at all concerned that Owens has his own personal customized Bobcat, complete with a Hemi engine, at his home.

“Owens is a big talker, but we’ll see how he does driving a Bobcat officially sanctioned by the World Bobcat Racing Federation,” Eubank said. “Winning this race is all about mental concentration and deftness at the controls of the machine.”

PlainsCapital Bank’s 98th and Quaker location has been six years in the making as bank leaders had the foresight to see the city’s population moving to the southwest side of town when they purchased the land in 2000. Today, market conditions are ripe to break ground on the site.

Tuesday’s ground breaking is open to the public and will also be attended by members of the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce. Parents of small children are encouraged to bring their kids to the event so they can help PlainsCapital break ground on the new bank facility. Each child will be given a plastic bucket and shovel for the occasion and will be included in a group photograph that will be used in PlainsCapital advertising materials. In addition, PlainsCapital’s Chuckwagon Gang will be cooking up free hot dogs for all attendees.

The new facility at 9802 Quaker Ave., on the corner of 98th and Quaker, will be a 4,829 square- foot free-standing bank dedicated to serving the growing number of residents and businesses in the booming southwest corridor. The developer is Graco Real Estate Development and the contractor is Lee Lewis Construction. The bank is expected to open in October.
