FirstSouthwest Sponsors Back-to-School Open House and PTA Meetings at Oran M. Roberts Elementary School to Increase Parent

Dallas-based diversified investment bank FirstSouthwest announced their
sponsorship of several upcoming parent engagement activities at O.M. Roberts Elementary School during the 2013-14 school year. In an effort to increase parent involvement, FirstSouthwest provided food, drinks and snacks for O.M. Roberts’ back-to-school open house on August 15 and also will provide refreshments for upcoming PTA meetings held every six weeks throughout the school year. With the help of FirstSouthwest, school administrators hope to achieve at least 60 percent parent involvement to help ensure the success and well-being of students.

Once a low performing school within Dallas ISD, O.M. Roberts made remarkable gains and achieved exemplary status from 2008-2010 with the help of strong and consistent leadership, capable teachers and
the work of volunteer tutors. In 2012, the 102-year-old school building in southeast Dallas was demolished to make way for a newly renovated facility. After being closed for two years, O.M. Roberts Elementary
School will reopen its doors on August 26. “When schools and parents work together to support learning, children are likely to perform better in school and stay in school longer,” said Hill A. Feinberg, chairman and CEO of FirstSouthwest. “Parents play a key role in establishing a positive outlook on education and FirstSouthwest is proud to support O.M. Roberts’ initiative to increase parent and family involvement.”

O.M. Roberts is the designated school for children living in Jubilee Park, a 62-block community in southeast Dallas. In March, FirstSouthwest, along with PlainsCapital Bank and PrimeLending, donated $100,000 to
renovate the Teen Place building at Jubilee Park & Community Center. FirstSouthwest also made a monetary donation to the “Pay’s for A’s” program that rewards middle school students in Jubilee Park’s afterschool program with $5 for every “A” received on their semester-end report cards.

“Educating children for a career and college-bound future cannot be accomplished by working in isolation,” said O.M. Roberts Principal Eneida Padro Colon. “At O.M. Roberts, it is one of our top priorities to work hand-in-hand with parents and community members to guarantee we are preparing our students for graduation and beyond. FirstSouthwest’s sponsorship has allowed us to celebrate and welcome our parents and community members to our new building while stressing the importance of true collaboration and commitment.”
