What Is a Debit Card Data Breach?

A debit card data breach occurs when there is an illegal data intrusion into the computer network of a payment system that processes PlainsCapital Bank card payments. When this occurs, PlainsCapital Bank receives notification from the payment processing network (such as Visa® or MasterCard®) that the data breach may have resulted in the theft of some of our customers' debit card numbers. These intrusions affect merchants throughout the United States who use affected payment processors.

How Does a Data Breach Impact Me?

When a data breach occurs, some PlainsCapital Bank customers may be affected. We take security breaches very seriously and act diligently to protect you. We work with the payment processing network and other agencies to investigate the breach, and we closely monitor any affected cards for suspicious activity. If suspicious activity is detected on a breached card, we will contact the affected customer and encourage them to replace their card immediately.

How Does PlainsCapital Protect Me if a Breach Occurs?

We have sophisticated fraud detection software that monitors every card transaction, 24/7. If suspicious activity is detected on your card, we will contact you right away. You will be encouraged to replace your card immediately to prevent fraud. You are also protected by the payment processing network’s Zero Liability protection policy should you have fraud on your account.

What Information is Compromised in a Data Breach?

A security breach of this nature typically applies to card information only—no personal information linked to card numbers, such as Social Security numbers, PINs, or account numbers, is disclosed.

Are There Other Ways My Information Can be Fraudulently Obtained?

Unfortunately, there are many ways information can be fraudulently obtained. Dumpster diving, mail theft, direct access to personal documents in your home, stolen wallets or purses, online data theft, and impostors are just some of the ways that people obtain confidential information.

Keep in mind that your cards should be safeguarded at all times. Here are some things that you can do to protect yourself: 

  • Review bank statements for accuracy
  • Never share your Personal Identification Number (PIN)
  • Be suspicious of anyone who calls or emails you seeking personal information
  • When you need to provide a Social Security Number or other confidential information, ALWAYS know who you are providing this information to and why it is being requested
  • Make sure that you are transacting with legitimate businesses
  • Tear up or shred confidential information before discarding

We often do not automatically re-issue debit cards to impacted customers due to the sophisticated fraud detection tools we have in place. However, if you are ever affected by a breach, you can request a free replacement card by calling PlainsCapital Bank Customer Service at 866.762.8392.

Am I Responsible for Fraudulent Activity on My Card?

In the case of a breach, you will not be responsible for any unauthorized transactions on your debit card accounts. We have sophisticated fraud detection software that monitors every card transaction, 24 hours a day seven days a week. If there is any suspicious activity on your account, we will notify you and you can request a free replacement card immediately. It is important to remember that the payment processing network’s Zero Liability fraud protection will cover you if you have any unauthorized use of your card. What if I Suspect Debit Card Fraud?

If you suspect any fraudulent activity on your debit card, you should immediately call PlainsCapital Bank Customer Service at 866.762.8392. You may cancel your card and request a replacement card. After normal business hours, your call will be transferred directly to the payment processing network (such as Visa® or MasterCard®) so that you may cancel your card.
