Les Eubank's son Brett, far right, is reunited with two former prisoners of war from the Iraq invasion that he rescued while on active duty in Iraq.
Brett Eubank is a hero to his dad, Les Eubank, executive vice president of lending at PlainsCapital Bank Lubbock.
He also is a hero to a group of United States soldiers captured during the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq. Brett, a former U.S. Marine first lieutenant, led a successful mission to rescue the POWs.
Two of the rescued soldiers were present to thank Brett in person during an Oct. 16 tribute in Boston honoring all Massachusetts war veterans. The Boston Globe sponsored the event and featured a photo of the reunion on the front page of the paper.
Eubank was a member of the 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion advancing toward Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit when an Iraqi civilian told him that U.S. soldiers had been captured and were being held as POWs in a housing complex in Samarra.
"When my son and a group of soldiers got to the complex, no one was there and they suspected it might be a trap. But they tried another apartment number and finally found the POWs," says his dad.
Eubank, who served two tours of duty in Iraq, is the recipient of the Bronze Star Medal for heroism.
