When Lynn Montgomery, president of the PlainsCapital Bank Western Place location, learned she had been named the 2006 Tarrant County Banker of the Year by the Tarrant County Bankers Association, she admits she was "shocked" that she had been selected. The former CPA, who spent 16 years as an auditor, had only joined the banking industry in 2000.
Montgomery was encouraged to go into the banking industry by a friend and mentor who convinced her to change careers. She also wanted to be more involved with her customers.
"As a CPA, I was auditing financial institutions and always looking at things historically. I wanted to be more proactive with customers," says Montgomery. "In banking, I have the opportunity to help them build their businesses."
The change in careers has been a good move, she says. "Banking is a great job, very exciting and rewarding." Her move to PlainsCapital also was positive.
"When my previous employer (TexasBank) was bought out by another bank, the move to PlainsCapital just felt right for me. It has a very similar culture. The customer comes first. With PlainsCapital, it's all about relationship banking - about employees, customers and the shareholders. My customers are making this transition very smoothly. They are pleased about the change."
Montgomery says 2006 was full of challenge and change. In addition to her move to PlainsCapital and being named Tarrant County Banker of the Year, she also scaled Mt. Rainier and bought a new house.
"It's been quite a year," she says.
